ASPIRE, which stands for Advancing Skills and Promoting Independence, Resilience and Empowerment, is a program specifically designed for female youth involved in the legal system. The program’s open-ended structure allows for both individual and group sessions, focusing on holistic development to nurture social, emotional, academic and personal growth. Female youth participate in ASPIRE within the SJDC under a Consent Decree.
ASPIRE emphasizes key areas such as:
- Education in Practice: Education through the Racine Unified School District is complemented by programs such as Girls… Moving On, which develops social skills, anger management and moral reasoning; and Mind Up, which equips female youth with strategies to foster optimism, build resilience and tackle life’s challenges effectively.
- Belonging: ASPIRE fosters a climate that provides a safe and supportive environment where female youth can learn, establish trusting relationships with peers and adults, increase engagement and improve outcomes.
- Social Emotional Wellness: There is a strong emphasis on building coping skills, managing emotions and adjusting one’s mindset based on what they can control.
- Career Readiness: Provides an opportunity for female youth to develop and change their thinking, goals and values by enhancing their financial literacy, career exploration and job preparation skills.
- Relationship Development: ASPIRE highlights the importance of forming positive relationships, challenges negative self-talk, promotes emotional safety and develops coping skills.
The program integrates cognitive-behavioral, strength-bases and trauma-informed approaches, offering a therapeutic environment where female youth feel supported and valued. Creative and physical activities complement private counseling sessions, ensuring a cohesive and nurturing experience that facilitates lasting positive change.
This innovative program reflect the Center’s commitment to empowering youth through education, skill-building and personal development.
